Digital payment in China is a key example of technology integrating into daily life. The most influential player in this digital revolution is Alipay, a mobile payment platform that has become an indispensable part of transactions in China.
In China, whether you're a tourist or a resident, it's essential to master the use of Alipay, as many places have fully embraced mobile payments—no need for bank cards or cash. Over 90% of transactions, including groceries, taxis, food deliveries, and tickets, are made via mobile apps. Alipay is becoming increasingly accessible to international travelers, offering a glimpse into China’s advanced digital landscape.
Guide to Alipay
1. Install the Alipay App and register
Download Alipay App, tap “sign up”to register, choose international version.
2.Verification
Under changes announced in March 2024, you can spend up to $2,000 per year without registering an ID. Note that if the transaction amount exceeds $500, you will need to provide ID to verify your Alipay account, so please carry your passport or ID with you.
After registering and verifying your account with Alipay, your annual transaction limit will increase to $50,000 and your single transaction limit will be $5,000.
3. Add bank card
Tap “Add now”and follow on-page prompts to complete the process.
Eligible bank card types: Visa/ Mastercard/ Diner’s Club/ Discover/ JCB/ UnionPay cards
Once you have successfully registered a card, you may proceed to make payments, which will be charged directly to your card. Each time you make a payment you will be required to input your 6-digit payment password.

1. Download or Update your Wechat app
On your mobile phone, Download or Update your Wechat app to the latest version. Register with your phone number or sign in.

Tap Me-Services-Wallet
3. Fill in your identity information and add a card
In Wallet, tap Add a Card. Read the Weixin Pay User Service Agreement and Privacy Policy and tap Agree. Follow the steps on the screen to fill in your Identity information. Tap Next to add your card. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process.
Tips: If you use your passport to verify your identitiy, you will get a notification asking you to upload a copy of your passport.
